Whalesong
2004, 23.5” x 23.5”……Commission…Multimedia: watercolor, pastel, Maui seawater on Wallis sanded pastel paper.
While living in Maui, I was commissioned to paint this for The Whalesong Project, which records and transmits the songs of whales off the coast of Kihei, Maui live over internet radio.
The whales were very present during the creation of this painting: jumping & splashing in front of the beaches where I went to meditate on the painting. One day as they were jumping, they called out their sounds above water, allowing me to hear their calls echoing off the cement wall behind me.
When I first sat to meditate on what this painting was to be, I immediately saw this beautiful mandala. The underlying six-pointed geometry encompasses the flower of life, the seed-form of all living things. This form illustrates what the whales have been doing for us for millennia: holding & balancing the vibrational frequencies of the Earth with their toning voices. I understood that they are no longer able to do their work, as there are too many conflicting, man-made sounds now passing through their home waters. I felt that they were releasing the responsibility to us humans.
Now, over 20 years later, I wonder…how have we done? Are the oceans faring worse or better? I only wish we could all wake up to the preciousness of our planet and care for it properly, with respect & love.
