Mother Maui/ Makuahine o’ka La’a Aina
2004, 30” x 40”………….SOLD…… Multimedia: watercolor, pastel, seawater on Wallis sanded pastel paper. Painted in a tiny hunter’s cabin in a grove of trees high in the Kipahulu gap, east Maui.
From a vision received on the island of Maui, here is our Earth Mother in her beautiful glory. She is the spirit of the Aina. There is no English equivalent to this word. It means the harmonious, living, breathing, unified Spirit of the Earth- all the humans, animals, plants, birds, ocean, air, rocks, and everything being in right balance and relationship with each other. There is a magical, humming, listening presence that is created when one is truly living in harmony with all of creation. This is my intuitive understanding of the Aina. The word also means “fertile soil”. “Makuahine o ka La’a Aina” means, “mother of the sacred earth”. Yeshua, Jesus the Christ was talking gently to me through his Holy Spirit the whole time I was painting, but I wasn’t ready to open to him. I was focused on Mother Earth, & the experience of native peoples.
2024 Note: I didn’t have Google translate back then…forgive me, Hawaiians, if it is in incorrect.
